Daybeds are some of my favorite pieces of furniture because they are just so versatile and functional. They are perfect for guest rooms as they can be used as beds when there is a guest around or just as a couch or sofa in other days. The most important part of a daybed would have to be the mattress. You want it to be comfortable enough to sleep on yet not feel too much like a bed when you are using it as a couch. Here is a quick guide to selecting a daybed mattress. The choice that you make will largely depend on the design of the daybed and of course your personal preferences. As a general rule, a daybed mattress should not be too thick that it resembles an actual bed. Generally, people get this piece of furniture to mainly serve as a sofa or couch and occasionally use it for lying down and sleeping. It will be really weird to seem like you have place a bed in your living room.

With that said, a thick daybed mattress will work in some cases. If the design of your daybed incorporates a deep crevice for the padding, you can use a thick mattress, as most of it will be hidden away from view. If you have a smaller frame, you should get one that is thinner. Before you place your mattress into the daybed frame, you should take a close look are the areas that the mattress will be in contact with. You want to make sure that there are no loose wires, sharp corners or edges that can snag the mattress when you take it out. If there are, you may want to cover those edges or just place a thick cardboard or thin board below the mattress.

While shopping for your daybed mattress, you may think that it is a good idea to buy a normal bed mattress to fit it in. Normal mattresses may be good to sleep on, but they may not be the best choice for daybeds. As a general rule, you would want to get one that is medium-firm/firm as they would be much more comfortable to sit on.

Another major consideration is size. Unfortunately, daybeds do come in way more sizes than normal beds so it is extremely important to get the size right. A convenient way would be to call up the store where you bought your daybed from and ask you can order a replacement daybed mattress from them.
